Broken Garage Door Spring or Opener Problem? How to Tell

A door that will not open can look like an opener failure even when the lifting problem is in the spring system. The opposite can also happen: a properly balanced door may be paired with an opener that has lost power, stopped responding to controls, or developed an internal fault. A few safe observations can help describe the symptoms, but springs and cables should not be touched or adjusted.

What the spring system does

The spring system counterbalances much of the door’s weight. Depending on the door, springs may be mounted on a shaft above the opening or along the horizontal tracks. Cables, drums or pulleys, bottom fixtures, and related hardware work with the springs to lift and control the door.

Because these components can store or transfer substantial force, do not loosen fasteners, wind or unwind a spring, move a cable, or remove a bottom bracket. A spring diagnosis should be handled as a complete balance-system inspection.

Symptoms that can point to a spring or balance problem

  • A loud sound from the garage followed by a door that will not lift.
  • A visible gap in a torsion spring coil above the door.

  2. Confirm the door is level and every visible roller remains in its track.
