A garage door should rise and close evenly while every roller remains in its track. If one corner is lower, a cable is loose, or a roller has left the track, the door is no longer following a controlled path. Stop the opener and keep the opening clear; continuing to run a crooked door can shift panels, tracks, rollers, cables, and hardware without warning.
What a crooked garage door can look like
- One bottom corner remains on the floor while the other side begins to rise.
- The top section leans or rubs against one track.
- A cable hangs loose near a vertical track or appears off its drum.
- One or more rollers sit outside the track.
- The door jams partway, shakes, or moves diagonally.
- A track is bent, separated from a bracket, or visibly out of line.
These are symptoms, not a diagnosis. Several components work together, and the visible part may not be the part that caused the door to shift.
Stop using the opener
Do not run another cycle to see whether the door “straightens itself.” The opener can pull on the high side while the low side remains bound, increasing force on sections, hinges, rollers, track brackets, cables, and the opener rail.
Do not stand under the door, pull on a cable, push a roller into the track, or loosen a bottom bracket. The cable and bottom fixture can be connected to the spring system and may be under significant tension.
Common systems involved in uneven movement
Cables and drums
Lifting cables transfer spring force to the bottom of the door. A cable can become loose, frayed, damaged, or displaced from its normal path. A drum or related hardware problem can also change how each side lifts. Cable work should be evaluated with the spring balance and door position, not handled as an isolated loose wire.
Rollers and hinges
A worn, seized, damaged, or displaced roller can cause binding or allow the door to move incorrectly. Bent hinges or loose fasteners can change section alignment. Some roller brackets are close to high-tension components, so do not remove hardware until the system has been secured.
Tracks and brackets
An impact, loose bracket, bent section, or structural movement can affect the track path. Do not hammer or pry the track while the door is loaded. Track position should be checked with the door secured and the cause of the misalignment understood.
Spring balance
A spring or balance problem can change the load on one or both sides of the door. A visibly separated spring, unusually heavy door, or slack cable is a reason to stop and request spring-system inspection.
What you can document safely
- Keep the opener idle and stay outside the door’s travel path.
- Photograph the complete door from a safe distance, then each track from the side.
- Note which corner is lower and whether the door is open, closed, or between positions.
- Record any impact, cable sound, loud snap, or gradual change that happened before the problem.
- Do not touch or move the door to improve the photo.
Photos can help describe the condition, but they do not establish why the door became crooked. The diagnosis still requires the interacting components to be checked.

A complete inspection should identify the cause before the door is repositioned. Depending on the system, that may include:
- Securing the door in its current position.
- Checking cables, drums or pulleys, springs, bearings, and bottom fixtures.
- Inspecting every roller, hinge, fastener, track, and bracket.
- Checking panels and the opening for impact or structural damage.
- Restoring alignment only after damaged or unsafe parts are addressed.
- Testing balance, travel, opener connection, and safety functions through a controlled cycle.
